The gym can be a hard to navigate as a beginner and it’s easy to get intimidated, if you don’t have a plan. Here are five training tips for beginners.
1. Start Light
In the beginning the most important thing is form. Make sure that you are doing the exercises correctly, even if this means using a lighter weight. Don’t let your ego get in the way. Too much weight and incorrect form are the easiest way to get hurt. How can you improve if you can’t go to the gym?
2. Get a Buddy
Find a friend with similar goals as yours to join in the gym. It will make each workout more fun and make it easier to stick to your routine.
3. Find a Coach or Routine to Follow
Everyone has a different budget. If you can afford a personal trainer, it can be extremely beneficial to your exercise journey. If a trainer is out of your price range, at least find an exercise plan. This will keep you accountable and you won’t be going into each workout blind.
4. Listen to Your Body
You can’t workout to the point of exhaustion every day. Eventually, your body is going to break down. If you’re tired or sore or need a day, use it to recover. Get a massage, foam roll, stretch. It won’t ruin your routine to use a day for active recovery.
5. Wear Proper Gear
Wear proper attire and equipment to the gym. I’m not telling you to spend hundreds of dollars on clothes, shoes and equipment, but find the right gear. Find shoes that fit properly and are comfortable for both lifting and running (I like Nike Metcons) and if you can invest in a heart rate monitor. A heart rate monitor can be great for monitoring how difficult a workout was and when to rest/recover.
